Relationships & family

Practical guidance on intimacy, emotional withdrawal, separation, fatherhood, grief, and changing family roles.

Men's Midlife GuideUpdated 22 September 2026

Look beyond the label of a midlife crisis

A relationship problem does not become less real because someone calls it a phase. Nor does emotional withdrawal automatically mean an affair, a wish to leave, or a mental health diagnosis. Work with what has actually happened and how it affects each person.

Make room for different needs

Individual therapy, relationship counselling and medical assessment answer different questions. A partner cannot be responsible for diagnosing or treating the other person. Both people are entitled to support and clear boundaries.

Our guides offer conversation starters and ways to prepare for support. They do not tell you whether to stay in or leave a relationship, and they do not excuse deception, coercion or violence.

Safety comes before joint problem-solving

When there is fear, intimidation or abuse, seek confidential individual support and local specialist advice. A joint conversation may not be safe. Use emergency services when anyone is in immediate danger.

For general couple communication, RelationshipInfo is a separate topic resource; this section keeps its focus on the individual experience of midlife.
